Research interests include Maya archaeology, settlement pattern research, cultural geography, mapping methods, and the application of remote sensing technology and geographic information systems in the study of archaeology. Research interests include spatial analysis of ethnic housing using geographic information systems, ethnogeography of Latin America focusing on the impact of globalization and urbanization in the construction of ethnic identity, human-environment relationships in the use and perception of rural landscapes among the Maya, and integrated research combining geography and prehistoric archaeology focusing on settlement patterns, social stratification, and origins of urbanism.
